Tutorial: ‘Collaged Envelopes’ Part 2

Hello and welcome to part 2 of ‘Collaged Envelopes’! If you haven’t already, I’d recommend checking out Part 1 of this series where I provide a brief overview of using envelopes in collage and some useful starting points.

In this post I’ll go into more detail about making your own mini envelopes and the different types of materials and template dimensions I used to make the envelopes below!

By making your own envelope template, it is much easier to collage/stitch/embroider etc. onto your surface as you are free to choose your own substrate and therefore material thickness. Some envelopes can be quite flimsy and tricky to use with mediums such as watercolour.

For these envelopes I used an inexpensive ‘Kraft Cropping Block’, which came in an order of 100 sheets A6 size. I also use this to make my personalised ‘Thank you’ cards. Please see below for the envelope dimensions:

After making one template, all you need to do is cut it out and draw around it for all future envelopes. The next step is to collage onto your drawn out template. I finished these envelopes by machine stitching over the top to secure everything in place. A good tip is to make sure the areas where you need to fold aren’t too thick with different layers as it will be tricky to close.

I ‘fastened’ my envelopes with a piece of folded over washi tape, but you could leave them open.

That’s it! You could add a little note or leave them empty, these make great pieces to accompany gifts in order to add that unique personalised touch!

Happy collaging!
